The Kentucky Derby takes place every year on the first Saturday in May, and its a race that many horse racing novices like to follow. Along with the Breeders’ Cup and the other ‘Triple Crown’ races, the Derby attracts the most mainstream attention. Understanding the intricacies of horse racing is a very involved study.

Despite the complexity of understanding horse racing, there are a few basic rules that can help the novice watch the Kentucky Derby with a greater degree of enjoyment. Until recently, the Derby was a race dominated by the favorite. In the 1970’s great horses like Secretariat and Seattle Slew blew away the field but since Spectacular Bid’s winning run in 1979 there have been only a couple of favorites to win the big race. While a serious horse player might not want to categorically dismiss the popular favorite, for the horse racing novice this is a helpful way to narrow down the field.

On a cold, gray morning in late January 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community and nationally to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts.

While the logic and necessity of demolishing the Mapes is very questionable, one thing that is certain is that the hotel was an important part of Northern Nevada history. The Mapes opened in 1947 and with it ushered in a new era for casino gambling and the state of Nevada. Despite some historical revisionism that suggests that the modern era began in Las Vegas with Bugsy Siegel’s famed Flamingo, the Mapes was actually the first building in America to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under the same roof. The Mapes attracted countless celebrities who’d make it their home when business brought them to Northern Nevada–this included movie stars like Clark Gable, TV stars like the cast of ‘Bonanza’ and political power brokers like infamous anti-Communist crusader Joseph McCarthy.

The purpose of this piece of writing is to point out some of the essential differences between common traditional national lottery games and the world renowned El Gordo lottery.

In a standard lotto game a player is typically required to pick a line of numbers from a particular number range as well as an additional bonus number. For example, in the UK National lotto a player if required to choose 6 main numbers from 1-49 inclusive and then a further bonus number from the same range. To win the jackpot, a player needs to match all of their six main chosen numbers with those numbers drawn. Every fantasy football draft, I go in with a strategy as I like to know where I plan to end up. This year’s approach was a bit different, and I’m pretty pleased with the results.

First, I drastically reduced the amount of studying I did. For the past few years I poured over every stat that I could and read the Pro Football Prospectus front to back (have you ever seen the size of that thing). I sure knew my fantasy football – which works great for talking to you guys – but talk about paralysis by analysis.

Everyone remembers AI’s infamous practice quote, but do people remember he is fifth all time in points per game. Personally I think he got a bad rep last year just because Billups and the Nuggets performed way above expectation. AI didn’t get along with his Pistons teammates but when has animosity distracted him from performing in games? Never.

His relationship with Larry Brown in Philadelphia was far from ideal, but this never seemed to effect his play. Leading the league in scoring multiple times, he led the Sixers to a finals. While the Pistons looked like a worse team with him, he showed his willingness to be a team player as he gave up his starting spot.
